Pinnin | PAX East 2018

Pinnin is a new series of articles that we're writing on new indie games that we think would make AWESOME looking pins. For our first article, Matt & Alina are giving their takes on some cool indie titles that were at PAX East!

1. SpiritSphere DX
By: Fabraz
Game Description: One part tennis, other part magical beat down! Play solo or compete with friends by battling across fantastical realms and unleash the power of the Spirit Spheres! Travel across the mystical kingdom as Lin in single player to rescue her sister Taya and face the nefarious Baphomet before it's too late! Or get 1-3 friends and play a few rounds of competitive sphere smashing! SpiritSphere DX comes with a staggering amount of modes including a squash mode, boss mode, ghost mode, vertical hand2hand mode and more!

Alina’s take: I love games with local multiplayer, and this one is taking it to the next level! Tons of game modes and for real, that vertical hand-to-hand use of the Switch is GENIUS.

Matt’s take: It looks like our friends at Fabraz Co have another smash hit on their hands! If you were a fan of Windjammers growing up like I was, it looks like you’ll feel right at home with SpiritSphere DX.

2. A Tofu Tail
By: lchemedium Game Description: A Tofu Tail is a flavor-swapping puzzle game featuring simply addictive gameplay that is bursting with color. A fairy tale of a man-turned-tofu by a deceptive fox spirit, the Kitsune, Mr. Tofu searches the surreal, puzzle realms of the foxes for a way to break his curse! You will need all of your wits and problem solving skills to help Mr. Tofu plop his way through 100+ puzzles in the wild wilderness of the Kitsune world. Fight off the territorial Tengu in the stormy Tempest Realm, avoid the Oni bouncers in the Disco Realm, manage out-of-body experiences in the Spirit Realm, and much more!

Alina’s take: Looks fun from head to toe! Charmingly eerie looking hand-drawn art, awesome chiptune music to get your brain focused and a plethora of clever puzzles for a very accessible price.

Matt’s take: While I’ve played a number of rolling cube games before, I haven’t seen one with such raw art! This is a world I’d like to explore.

3. Bullet Age
By: Halfbot Game Description: Bullet Age is a co-op action platformer with RPG elements. Complete a variety of quests ranging from gathering supplies and rescuing villagers to helping a farmer find his lost chickens. You will encounter strange creatures and terrifying new threats as you fight to infiltrate the A.R.C. forces and discover the mysterious secrets in Bullet Age

Alina’s take: The art style reminds me a lot of Scribblenauts! I’m interested to see how that look plays out with the gloomy plot.

Matt’s take: Bullet Age looks like it’ll scratch that Metal Slug itch I’ve had for years - and then some!

4. Boyfriend Dungeon
By: Kitfox Games
Game Description: For your summer job, you’re tasked with clearing the creatures in “the dunj”. Soon you discover weapons you find transform into cuties… and they’re SINGLE! (What a craaazy coincidence because you also happen to be up for grabs yourself.) Spend the cash you earn on romantic outings to forge precious moments with your lovers and work together to clear the rampant monster infestations, because after all, a couple that slays together, stays together.

Alina’s take: This is hilarious! But it also looks like it will have some serious life advice. Did you notice they teased a cat weapon in the trailer? 11/10 right off the bat, and the bat is also your boyfriend.

Matt’s take: Dungeons. Weapons. Boyfriends. What’s not to like?

5. Guacamelee 2
By: Drinkbox Studios Game Description: Seven years after defeating Carlos Calaca, Juan Aguacate is forced to don his luchador mask again to face a new threat -- this time to the very fabric of space and time. Punch your way through a whole new Metroid-vania style world and try to save the Mexiverse!

Alina’s take: A sequel to one of the best action platformer games ever? ¡Sí, por favor! That grapple hook thingy and the space/time mechanics look like an awesome addition to the gameplay.

Matt’s take: DrinkBox Studios never disappoints! With Guacamelee 2, Super Meat Boy Forever, and Spelunky 2 on the horizon, it looks like it’ll be an awesome year for indie sequels!

6. Wulverblade
By: Fully Illustrated
Game Description: Help Britannia defeat the Romans in Wulverblade – a hardcore side-scrolling beat 'em up inspired by classics such as Golden Axe, Sengoku, and Knights of the Round! Experience a historically inspired storyline across eight campaign levels – or test your skills in the game’s deadly arenas. Go it alone or team up with a friend in local two-player co-op. It’s time to show the Ninth Legion what you’re made of!

Alina’s take: I think this is the most brutal beat ‘em up I’ve ever seen. Loving everything audio here: the music, sound effects, and voice acting truly takes you to a Viking battle.

Matt’s take: Looking part Castle Crashes, and part Shank, Wulverblade looks like the badass beat’em up that we’ve all been waiting for.

That's it for this month! Make sure to check out all these awesome games! Hopefully we might see a few of them one day on Indie Section!
